Microsoft is reshaping Copilot from a chat assistant into a single environment for office work, custom application building, and autonomous agents. The redesigned experience brings Chat and Cowork together in Home, adds a natural-language coding workspace, and introduces Autopilot for persistent tasks—alongside new enterprise data connections and controls for managing AI costs.

Key takeaways

  • Home brings conversational help and delegated work into one starting point.
  • Code lets employees describe apps and workflows in natural language.
  • Autopilot is designed to carry out recurring, multistep work independently.
  • Fabric IQ and Work IQ add business context, while usage-based billing applies to several advanced capabilities.

For enterprise leaders, the announcement signals a shift from purchasing AI primarily as a productivity add-on to managing it as part of business processes, data architecture, and operating costs.

One Copilot experience for different kinds of work

Home will bring Chat and Cowork together. Chat is intended for quick questions, while Cowork handles work users can delegate, such as preparing a proposal response or assembling materials for a financial close. Microsoft says Copilot is working toward routing requests to the appropriate capability automatically, so users will not always need to select a mode.

Microsoft is also bringing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into the Copilot experience, with document creation and team collaboration among the intended uses. A planned Today command center is designed to surface priorities and missed follow-ups across email, calendars, meetings, and Teams. Home is beginning to roll out through Microsoft’s Frontier early-access program.

Code opens application building to more employees

The new Code experience is aimed at both developers and business users. Employees can describe an app, dashboard, tracker, or workflow in natural language, while developers can use the environment to accelerate creation. Microsoft says Code uses technology related to GitHub Copilot and runs applications in a sandbox.

Copilot Managed Runtime, now in public preview, provides a governed hosting environment inside an organization’s Microsoft 365 environment. For IT teams, that may offer a path to move useful prototypes into managed use while overseeing access, security, and lifecycle. This also makes data quality and governance important: applications built quickly still need dependable definitions and trusted underlying data. For organizations using Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, a well-managed data foundation can help those tools produce consistent results rather than simply accelerating access to inconsistent information.

Autopilot adds persistent agents

Autopilot, formerly called Scout, is designed to keep working after a user assigns it a name, role, and goal. It has its own identity, memory, and workspace, and can handle recurring or multistep tasks such as supplier reviews. Microsoft says Autopilot is expanding to private preview, giving selected organizations an opportunity to evaluate the model before broader adoption.

Persistent agents raise practical questions beyond capability: what data they can access, how their actions are reviewed, and when human approval is required. Clear ownership, auditability, and measurable outcomes will be essential to determine whether delegated work saves time or shifts effort into correction and oversight.

Enterprise context and cost controls

Fabric IQ is being integrated with Chat and Cowork to provide context from enterprise data and semantic models. Work IQ is intended to connect Copilot with operational data and workflows in Dynamics 365 and Power Platform. Fabric IQ integration is generally available, while Work IQ is planned for public preview. The aim is to help Copilot connect information across business systems, rather than rely only on the prompt in front of it.

Microsoft is extending Agent 365 cost-management tools with policies, model access controls, and usage visibility. Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot remain covered by user subscriptions, while Cowork, Code, Autopilot, and certain advanced workloads use usage-based billing. That makes governance and ROI measurement central to rollout planning: leaders will need to track not just usage, but whether agents improve reporting speed, reduce rework, or deliver other measurable business results.
